ENERGY SAVING OPPORTUNITY SCHEME (ESOS) IN THE UK

The Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is the UK’s response to Article 8(4) of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive. This legislation requires all large undertakings in the UK to introduce independent and cost-effective energy audits. The scheme runs in four yearly cycles and is now in phase 2 with any undertaking meeting the criteria below required to be compliant by 5 December, 2019.

A large undertaking is a company, charity, or joint enterprise which meets any one of the following criteria:

  • 250 employees or more; or
  • An annual turnover exceeding €50 million; and
  • An annual balance sheet exceeding €43 million

The public sector is not required to participate.

ISO 50001 certification has been identified as a route to compliance with ESOS, providing it covers at least 90% of the undertakings total energy usage. Accredited ISO 50001 certification, covering 100% of energy usage, is the only alternative route to ESOS compliance that will not require the involvement of an ESOS Lead Assessor.
